The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy
by AutumnSpectacle.com staff

Traveling trophies are a tradition unique to college football. In no other sport do you see joy expressed from the faces of athletes simply because they win the right to “own” an old jug, a wooden bucket or a golden cowboy hat.
Among the collection of axe heads, bronzed pigs and jeweled shillelaghs, there is a tro…

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP)—Kevin Fogler caught a 73-yard TD pass and Anthony Wright returned a punt 88 yards for a score, helping Air Force beat Army for a fourth straight time with a 35-7 victory Saturday.
Asher Clark rushed for two second-half scores as the Falcons (6-4, 4-2 Mountain West) broke open a tight game to become bowl eligible.
Before the game, the Air Force Academy held a moment of silence in honor of the shooting victims at Fort Hood. The flags on the campus also were lowered…

Craig Schaefer sacked Jimmy Clausen in the end zone with 60 seconds left Saturday and Navy held on for a 23-21 victory, its second straight at Notre Dame Stadium.
No. 19 Notre Dame (6-3) scored with 24 seconds left on a 31-yard pass from Jimmy Clausen to Golden Tate to cut the lead to two, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP)—The Army-Air Force football game is under way after a moment of silence for the victims of the Fort Hood shootings.
The brief observance at Falcon Stadium on Saturday was also meant to remember soldiers from nearby Fort Carson who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
About 40 squadrons of cadets from the Air Force Academy and West Point stood at attention on the field, their pennants fluttering in a stiff, cold breeze. Thousands of civilians and military pers…

During my childhood, I always think whether we have choices in life. I always heard from my grand parent saying that life is always tough for them and working hard is a must for them in order to maintain current life style. Is that really true, and by working hard, playing less we can get what we want? When I grow up, I saw the same thing happen to myself and people around me. Then I ask myself another question, when the time we get what we think we want, is that really what we want?

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8, 2009 – The price appears to be right for former game show host and naval aviator Bob Barker, who donated $3 million to help build a premiere Defense Department center for wounded warriors suffering traumatic brain injuries.
The donation brings the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund to its $60 million goal to build the National Intrepid Center of Excellence, Bill White, president of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, announced yesterday.…

I am leaving, you will always be on my mind, and your touch I have memorized.
Your smile is there in my eyes, your laugh lives in the heart, and your love hold me tight.
Love me when I am gone, love me when all I am is a memory.
I will feel your tears, your sadness I will carry on my shoulders, your fear I will hold you from no matter where I am.
Feel the rain as it falls, the wind and it flows, I will send my thoughts in them, I will be with you.
I am so far away but I can still feel your touch…

Advancing Marines test new Afghan war doctrine
By Golnar Motevalli – Mon Oct 12, 2009
BARCHA, Afghanistan (Reuters) – Winning ground is one thing. Convincing Afghan villagers you will not leave, abandoning them to a vengeful Taliban, is a bigger challenge for U.S. Marines advancing deep into southern Helmand province.
The Marines, part of a 10,000-strong force sent to Afghanistan this year, have pushed south into hostile terrain, winning ground and pledging to build the long-term trust…

Dear WWII Veterans, their Families, and Troops,
Recently, I watched a special on the Smithsonian Channel about the events on D-Day. The end of the documentary closed with Gregorian Chant and a view of the Memorial Cemetery in Normandy, France with grave markers for all of the soldiers who died on that day.
I was speechless!!
This event happened before I was born and I think it is a shame that I did not see these images until I was an adult. These men made sure that people like myself would be…

'Bagpipes and Bugles'
A flag flying, a hand laying over the top.
Bugles in the background, tears in many eyes.
Children waving, parents and partners strong as can be asked
They know they may never be seen again, but each soldier does his duty
Volunteers, heroes, somebody's guardian angel and heart.
WIngs don't show through, but the heart is all thats needed.
The horns blow, a cold wind seems to empty from them into each families heart.
Some will come back, some will not, those who die will die w…

I have bee asked many times over the years why do I take the time to go to the funeral of someone that I have never heard of and sound Taps over them? You don't get paid, you don't receive any kind of recognition, you don't get any kind of award for doing it. You get nothing. I then have to respond to them that I get more than they know. No I don't get paid, once in a great while I will get a thank you, sometimes a hug and a hand shake. but that alone to me is some of the bet recognition I could…

By Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune
They were all dead men who refused to die.
Outnumbered by the enemy, they risked everything to save the soldiers around them -- and they succeeded.
They are heroes, and they have the hardware to prove it. When more than 50 of the 95 living recipients of the Medal of Honor met in Chicago for their annual convention, they formed one of the nobler gatherings this city has seen. Never before have the Medal of Honor recipients convened here.
But most of these men…

Eight Years After 9/11: Why Osama bin Laden is a Failure
By TONY KARON – Time Magazine
He may have eluded justice and the long reach of the world's most powerful military force; his followers may (and probably will) strike again at some point in the future, near or distant; but history's verdict on Osama bin Laden has been in for some time, now: Al-Qaeda failed.
The 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington - like those that preceded it in East Africa in 1998 and those that followed in London,…

Dear brave men and women, although you may feel alone
Know this now from your country your're not forgotten at home.
You don't make the policy but you do make a stand
Against dictatorship and tyranny in a very foreign land.
If you ever stop to wonder if there's a difference that you make
Just think of your family's Freedom if someone else tried to take
Freedom, rights and justice others hav…
