Why I Serve
I ETS'd over 20 years ago, but there are times I miss the camaraderie, the brotherhood. Then I watch the news, recognize too many young faces, and see names of some that I served with all those years ago, and knew my glory days have passed.

These days, give me a high-power rifle, a perch, and let me take out some "insurgents" from a distance, without having to run like a 17-year-old in the Olympics. If you can arrange that, I'll be there.

Keep those funky people that "protest the war" but "support the troops" away from me. They may have a right to free speech, but so do I. My speech, though, isn't always verbal.

Military spouses starting businesses

By Nichole L. Torres

from: Military spouses starting businesses

Running your own business can provide the flexibility, income and work-life balance that you crave. And it's exactly that flexibility that makes entrepreneurship a great match for the frequently transferred military spouse. "Managing your own business takes mor… Continue

If you’re reading this, thank an American Veteran

People in America often take freedoms and rights for granted, never giving much thought to the price of those sacredly-held treasures that much of the world doesn’t have, let alone understand.

The thing many people often forget is that every freedom assured the citizens of the United States of America have been bought by the sweat, tears, toil, and often, th

'You're just a voter'

I went to vote this morning. In fact, I was the 23rd voter of the day at my polling place, a number generally hit around noon or 1 p.m. during most elections. This, the 2008 Presidential election, though, is not in the same category as most elections.

After voting, I started to leave when I heard something of a debate with someone who works with the local city council member, someone involved in signing in voters, and a grayed long-haired man. It was about his "appropriateness" in being in the… Continue

Coasties are earning high praise in the wake of Hurricane Ike

The U.S. Coast Guard units in and around the Gulf Coast are certainly earning high praise from the news media, from over 40 people who have been rescued this morning, and leaders in various areas impacted by Hurricane Ike.

Now, at 2:32 p.m., with Hurricane Ike at a category 2 with 105mph winds, many are surprised the Coast Guard is still doing rescues, as a notice, according to some, had been issued earlier saying rescues would end hours ago. They haven't, and there are at least two people aliv… Continue

How to get restful sleep and avoid stress during Sept. 11 anniversary

As the clock ticks down the hours to the start of ceremonies on the morning of September 11, 2008, commemorating the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, there is something we must all remember: it is okay to turn off the TV and not watch.

According to several studies done at three-month, six-months, and one-year following September 11, 2001, many people around the country had problems sleeping, especially in the first month following that tragic morning.

Stress can lead to insomnia, depressi… Continue

Did you get your six?

Sealy has a been running an ad campaign called "Better Six" since late June, telling people, in essence, that six hours of sleep each night is just fine.

Is six hours of sleep enough? Interesting question. That question, along with several calls, led Awake In America to address the ad, especially since Sealy makes its money from people and their sleep habits.

Protecting military families from identity theft

While searching and researching for information about a topic on privacy, I stumbled across a page on the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) site. It's solid on preventing identity theft and privacy for military families.

The first file on the page offers tips for military personnel and their families on how to deter, detect, and defend against identity theft. The second deals with {censored} jerks pretending they have ties to the American Red Cross when they call people.

There are other links a… Continue

Was AWOL, but now I am back

Well, despite some rumors to the contrary, word of my demise is premature. Again.

Back in mid-June, twice actually, I had health run-ins that landed me in the hospital both times. The second run-in actually got me an ambulance ride, complete with fire department and police escort, with police cars blocking off several very busy intersections and US Rt. 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) in Northeast Philadelphia, during the transport. Sometimes it helps knowing a few folks who are firefighters and cops.… Continue
